In conditions like seawater, concentrated brine, and chlorine-containing process media, material selection often gets stuck in the range of "316L is not enough, but titanium is too expensive." 2507 super duplex steel is the grade that fills this gap — but it is not a "higher-grade 2205," and using it in the wrong place is very costly.
One-Sentence Judgment
A PREN above 42 means its pitting resistance in high-chloride environments far exceeds 316L (24–26) and 2205 (34–36); the cost is a narrower welding window, harder cold forming, and a price about 2–3 times that of 316L. Do not use it where temperatures exceed 300℃ long-term, and do not use it for strong reducing acids such as hydrochloric acid.
How PREN Is Calculated
Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number:
PREN = Cr% + 3.3 × Mo% + 16 × N%
Using this formula (with nominal element contents):
- 316L: about 24–26
- 2205 duplex steel: about 34–36
- 904L: about 34–36
- 2507 super duplex steel: about 42–45 (25% chromium, 4% molybdenum, 0.3% nitrogen)
- High-molybdenum austenitics such as 254SMO: about 42–44
PREN is only a ranking tool, not a promise of "how long it will last." Different microstructures with the same PREN (austenitic vs duplex) differ greatly in stress corrosion and welding performance.
When 2507 Is Worth Using
- Seawater systems: seawater cooling, desalination, offshore platform piping — chloride ion about 19000 mg/L and temperatures not low, both 316L and 2205 may pit;
- Chlorine-containing chemical media: chloride solutions, chlorine-containing organic processes;
- Flue gas desulfurization, paper bleaching: combinations of chloride ion + acidity + temperature;
- Where both pressure containment and corrosion resistance are needed: duplex steel yield strength is about twice that of austenitic, so wall thickness can be thinner.
Two Hard Limits
① Upper temperature limit. Duplex steel in long-term service above 300℃ precipitates brittle phases (sigma phase), and both toughness and corrosion resistance decline. High-temperature conditions should use 310S or nickel-based alloys; do not force duplex.
② Strong reducing acids. 2507's high molybdenum is for chloride pitting resistance, not hydrochloric acid resistance. In reducing media such as hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid, it also corrodes rapidly — such conditions require high-nickel alloys (such as C276) or non-metallic linings.
Welding: Narrower Window Than 2205
- Heat input controlled at about 0.5–1.5 kJ/mm (stricter than 2205), interpass temperature not exceeding 150℃;
- Filler metal use matching ER2594; do not use 2205's ER2209 or 316L filler;
- Shielding gas with nitrogen added (Ar + 2–3% N₂); nitrogen is an austenite-forming element, and loss by burning leads to excessive ferrite;
- After welding **pickling and passivation are mandatory**: super duplex weld oxidation color is harder to treat than 316L, and if untreated it becomes a pitting initiation site;
- When disputed, use a ferrite meter to measure the two-phase ratio (common acceptance range 35–65%).
Three Practical Processing Issues
- Difficult cold forming: high strength, large springback; bending requires greater tonnage and overbend compensation; small-radius bending easily cracks;
- Machining: obvious work hardening, requires carbide tooling, low cutting speed, sufficient cooling;
- Lead time: non-standard sizes require scheduling, longer than 304/316L; projects must stock material in advance.
Common Pitfalls
- Treating 2507 as a "universal corrosion-resistant steel," using it in hydrochloric acid or high-temperature conditions, and it fails within months;
- Welding 2507 with 2205 filler (the weld becomes the weakest point);
- Comparing only PREN without considering microstructure: austenitic steel with the same PREN is more prone to stress corrosion cracking in chloride stress environments;
- Purchasing only writes "2507" without the standard (UNS S32750 / EN 1.4410), making it impossible to judge on arrival;
- Ignoring iron contamination: surfaces contacted by carbon steel tooling will rust first in seawater.
Tell us the medium (chloride ion concentration), temperature, pressure, and applicable standard, and we will give selection recommendations and corresponding quotations for 2205 / 2507 / high-molybdenum austenitic based on PREN and operating conditions — the cost of these materials is not in the unit price, but in an unplanned shutdown.
