Ferritic stainless

430 stainless steel

Ferritic grade with 16–18% chromium and no nickel — the cost-effective choice for indoor appliances, kitchen equipment and decorative trim where chlorides are absent.

Where 430 is the right choice

  • Indoor appliance panels— washing machine drums, oven fronts, microwave cavities: no chlorides, and it takes a good 2B or BA finish.
  • Kitchen equipment and sinks— where 304 is not required by code and cost matters.
  • Decorative trim— elevator interiors, furniture edging, indoor cladding.

Where it is not

  • Outdoor or coastal— no molybdenum and no nickel, so pitting starts quickly where salt deposits form.
  • Welded structures under load— ferritic grades lose toughness in the heat-affected zone and are prone to grain growth. Use 304/316L instead.
  • Deep drawing with severe deformation— formability is well below 304; ears and cracking appear.
  • Low temperature— the ductile-to-brittle transition limits use below about −20 °C.
430 is magnetic and cannot be hardened by heat treatment. If your drawing calls for "non-magnetic", choose an austenitic grade — 430 will fail the check.
