Line pipe: API 5L and the stainless alternatives
API 5L is a carbon and low-alloy line pipe standard and we do not produce it. For corrosive service, specify stainless tube to ASTM A312 / A358 or EN 10217-7.
Products and the standards we supply to
| Product | Standard | Grades we normally ship |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon / low-alloy line pipe | API 5L (B / X42–X70) | Not produced here — reference only |
| Stainless seamless tube | ASTM A312 / EN 10216-5 | TP304 / TP316L, Φ6–630 mm |
| Stainless welded tube | ASTM A358 / EN 10217-7 | TP304 / TP316L, large diameter |
| Duplex tube | ASTM A790 / A928 | S31803 / S32205 (2205) |
| Fittings | Matched to tube standard | Elbows / tees (via partner) |
What you can expect
- We state the boundary plainly: API 5L belongs to the carbon and low-alloy family, not stainless. Listing it among stainless products makes buyers assume both are available, and the mismatch only surfaces at quotation.
- For corrosive lines (chlorides, sour gas, seawater) use 316L or 2205 to A312 / A790, and specify PREN plus the required tests.
- Seamless Φ6–630 mm; welded tube available in large diameters. UT / RT / ET and pickling & passivation to order.
Frequently asked
No. API 5L is a carbon and low-alloy line pipe standard. If a project specifies API 5L, the design is carbon steel; where the medium is corrosive, switch to A312 / A790 at design stage.
No — allowable stress and wall thickness rules differ, so equal wall thickness is not a valid substitution. Send design pressure, temperature and medium and we recalculate to A312.
